NEW YORK (Reuters) – A federal appeals court in New York ruled that a Yahoo Inc Internet radio service is not required to pay fees to copyright holders of songs it plays, a defeat for Sony Corp’s BMG Music.

In a case closely watched by the recording industry, the U.S. Second Circuit Court of Appeals upheld a 2007 jury verdict that Launchcast, a webcasting service run by Yahoo’s Launch Media Inc unit, did not give listeners enough control to be an “interactive service” that would require the fees.

LARRY GLICK MEMORIAL RADIO AWARD ESTABLISHED AT

EMERSON COLLEGE

Boston – The Larry Glick Memorial Award has been established at Emerson College in Boston by friends and family of the legendary talk-master Larry Glick, who died in March 2009 during heart surgery. He was 86.

 A pioneer of talk radio, Larry was based in Boston from 1964-1992 first at WMEX for four years, followed by nearly 20 years at WBZ and, finally, at WHDH.  Devoted “Glicknics,” across the U.S. and in eastern Canada tuned in for his late night/early morning broadcasts, many listening with radios hidden beneath their pillows so as to not disturb their spouses or let parents in on the secret.  A Glick University T-shirt was a coveted status symbol; many fans claim they still have them.

Known for his wit and sense of fun, Glick often tracked down celebrities by phone as well as made ‘celebrities’ of his regular callers.  A licensed pilot and hypnotist, he lived in Florida during his retirement and reconnected with many of his fans while working at a Legal Sea Foods restaurant as a greeter.  He was inducted into the Massachusetts Broadcasters Hall of Fame last fall. 

Glick received formal training in broadcasting while attending night classes at Emerson College in Boston.  The College continues the tradition of training students in all aspects of radio broadcast, satellite, and Internet transmission including through coursework and hands-on experience on award-winning WERS (88.9 FM; http://www.wers.org/) and the Emerson Talk & Information Network.

The Larry Glick Memorial Radio Award will be used to encourage students to pursue careers in radio and to support their attendance at professional workshops/conferences to further their training and create a network of contacts.  Those interested in paying tribute to Larry Glick and advancing the careers of aspiring professionals can send their tax-deductible contributions payable to Emerson College to:
